I found this rather easy and simple to follow through, and the visuals all help to? aid the speaker by supplying nonverbal communication, which matches the para-linguistic skills of Sir Ken Robinson. This is where i disagree with him. There is 2 ways to become sucessful in life. Have talent ( the people he mentioned have talents ) or have a great college degree( engineering,accounting...) . But he still is right in some aspect. College is now viewed as "High School part 2" and many college grads come out finding that they are no better off? than they were 4 years ago. That was a bad typo on my behalf. I meant research. I would not say as a whole? that the US education system is worse than other countries. There are area's were countries like Finland, Norway and Sweden excel at in education but you will find that they are well ahead of other socialist countries as well. I do not think it is possible for the US to follow the Finish system.

I am just finishing uni, and just had my dissertation result back. I am truly disappointed as I just scraped a pass. I remember my university's biochem course was dedicated to learning 10 biochemical pathways. We learned the structure, name, and enzyme of each step of the pathway. I never even went to class because the notes were posted online and the prof just regurgitated the notes onto a board. At the end I walked out with an A+, not because I'm smart, but because I? crammed all those useless facts in 2-3 weeks. What did I learn from it? Nothing. I don't wanna crush your enthusiasm man, but inspiration and not being concerned with debt doesn't make it disappear. If/when you graduate you'll get a letter saying that it's time to start paying your student loans back and that's when everything'll change (especially if the interest rate DOUBLES as they're currently planning for July 30). Sure, some people are lucky and have what? it takes to overcome the odds and I'm guessing Chomsky realized that, but most become slaves to the system.

I guess your asking originally why we won't be eager to take much more foreigners here. We also have system that every citizen have right to get pretty good money for example in case of joblessness etc. So taking foreigners here means we? have to pay to them their living before they get job if they get one. Do you understand that spending on teachers? is spending on students. Or what you mean by spending on students? Reason why we spend money on teachers paychecks is following. That creates competition of who get to be teacher which leads to best people available being teachers(Teacher being very good and wanted job, like doctor for example). That leads to students getting better education. Besides that it's important to keep class sizes relatively small(not too much students per teacher).

And bashing that as somehow "more wrong" thing is irrational unless you claim to know some kind of objective morality. Usually it's understood that morality is subjective. Even Sweden can't take all people in that try to come. In our case there is real risk that if we just take people in more than we can actually educate well enough to get a job they will end up begging in the streets or getting? involved in criminal activity.

About middle level,? 7-8. And to me even it will probably be hard to find decent Job etc. in future. But what you mean by we having already okey students? No what i am saying is that you can always spend more and get a student to achieve more. Because of the fact resources are limited you? So basically my point on this issue is that if you have medicine to heal 50 people that otherwise would die you heal 50 people. There is no limit to how much resources you can spend on a person? Really? So... basically you? are saying you guys have unlimited resources? But as said results themselves aren't important. We don't test students until their 16. But I think that it's important to take as much people as we can help. We at least don't have unlimited resources and if we have res. for example 50 new people/year, it would be wrong to take 200 and then none of them would not take care properly.

You are not dumb, the US states education system are a mess and which doesn't give all US student a chance to perform as good as they could. The schools that perform bad need to get help, not being punished for it. All schools should be free have basic food to students, because that is important. US citizens spend as much money on schools as Finnland does, but the systems are just plain wrong and? should spend more money on the teachers, the buildings, small classes and not to many bloody tests.

We are not. We are just having a better organisation for the schools. Where the main goal is to teach ALL student, not just the best. Because we have higher taxes so we can pay for having better, free schools for everyone. That we try to make social background not that important for a student to be able to perform well. Not becuase of the colour of the skin or hair. Because there are no scientific profs of that. You just make claims without any? data to support it.

Are you sure you're being fair? What does this look like to your students? If the lower-SES students see you treating higher-SES students less harshly, isn't this a demonstration of your bias? What you're effectively doing is re-enforcing negative social stereotypes of low-SES students. Have you thought about why they don't care less? Do they know that you know and care about their home life? Is their behaviour due to diet? Do they have? access to learning resources? What have you missed?

So you cannot say that elementary schools don't teach us useful stuff - they do. I just see someone who doesn't like change. Most of us no longer teach our children how to? find and kill rabbits as a life skill because it will be irrelevant to their lives. Same with these paper and pencil algorithms. Let's face it, computing devices aren't going away. Let's teach our kids what the arithmetic means, not how to turn the paper-and-pencil crank. The? Education Freedom Coalition has done extensive research in which curriculum companies align and which ones don't. (it wouldn't let me insert the web address...but just do an internet search for this and you should hopefully find it) I was really frustrated when I found out that the homeschool math workbooks my son had been using all year included some common core. That college professor was not exaggerating. I tutored math in college. I? had to teach many of the students to add, subtract, multiply and divide before I could tutor them in algebra. Some literally could not add 4+9 without using their fingers. At Winco markets, the cashiers are not only told how much to give back in change...it gives them PICTURES of each bill and coin and tells them how many to give of each. We are teaching students NOTHING and creating an illiterate generation.

Because, as pointed out, these alternative algorithms make it more difficult and time consuming to acquire the skills needed to solve problems. The kicker, the "standard" algorithm IS NOT TAUGHT, making? it difficult to advance into the higher math. The primary school my son attended thought there was no reason to do rote memorization of multiplication tables. So, we taught him, over his protest. He has said that if he had not been grounded in math that way, he would not have become a MechE.

I am not supporting either text book mentioned above. I do think that students should eventually be able to efficiently use the standard algorithm. But, many of the algorithms that she is demonstrating help kids with their place value which is very, very important. There are plenty of manipulatives that can be used to strengthen students skills. Once they understand what they are doing they can be confident to use any algorithm. Who cares which one as long as they are able? to find the answer.

I don't think the goal of? this video was to promote a teacher-less classroom. Right now especially, technology (and the internet, primarily) can be used to *help* teachers. I know my school uses these things called "Gizmos" on ExploreLearning, and they just reinforce lessons that teachers have already presented to the class. It is also meant to show how class discussion and the student's ability to bounce ideas off of peers can be a fantastic learning tool if harnessed correctly.

Its important to look at the over all cost here. One laptop can reasonably last u 5 years, if not longer, so over the course of a ten year school cycle ull need 2 laptops. This video is really quite ignorant, it says that children can't learn in such circumstances. However, my school is quite similar, my classmates seem to be fine with it, they get A's if they try hard enough. That's what teachers in the classroom do. They teach to meet their needs. Visual, auditory and tactile learners have different needs. At the uni level one can take classes in how to start & finance a biz. K-12 is preparation for adult life and after grade 12 one may freely choose to learn how to start a biz. But that is too hard for? most, instead an entry level job is sought via a specialized degree. Some school systems in USA offer a Manual Arts path for those not suited to academics..but that path can lead to lackluster earnings. Anyone can adapt to traditional ed but you have to want to, you have to want the higher earnings path. Even on a Manual Arts path one should have a high earnings goal, so even to assemble the Merecedes/McLaren SLR or Mr. Branson's space jets you have to be pretty sharp and well? rounded.

but I certainly didn't enjoy that environment. It's too easy to categorise some kids as simply "troublemakers" when they aren't following the system. The teachers do not have the time nor the resources to address these issues individually -? there are just too many kids to look after! But this is the system forced upon us. This is the direction Western society has moved. I would much rather a system such as those existing in tribal communities thousands of years ago!

Yes society as a whole has moved? ahead in leaps and bounds due in large part to the advancement in understanding - especially in the sciences. But not everyone adapts well to the traditional school room. And it's these individuals that I believe have been failed. The school system is an unnatural learning environment - forced learning! That's because they can't do anything about it. They are required by law to have you schooled and cannot afford a private tutor. Thinking about the quality of your education would be pointless since they feel powerless to influence it. They are as much trapped by the government monopoly of education as you are. I know how you feel. Some teachers and kids in my classes probably think I'm the stupidest piece of shit they've ever seen in their life because I don't have a good GPA. I struggle immensely in math, (probably because all the? math teachers I've had are complete idiots, especially my current one.) but I'm highly skilled in grammar, spelling, and history. But, almost all the grammar and history I've learned comes from me and googling stuff off the internet. The schools don't teach a damn thing.

It depends on the private school. I came out of a public school (i.e a private school) for 1.5 years. I hated it, but I was miles ahead of the kids at state school I went to afterwards. I agree with you that the teachers in state schools are at least of equal standard - and many wouldn't take a private post on ethical grounds. But most state schools have about 30 kids per class, where most private schools have around 20 - the difference this makes with one teacher per class is unreal.?

Maybe it's different in the US, but having gone to both state funded and privately funded schools here? in the UK i can say that state schools are definitely better, in terms of teaching quality. Here teachers in privately funded schools don't need formal qualifications or even degree's to teach their subject as the government isn't allowed to regulate them. Whereas to teach in government funded schools you need a relevant degree, and a minimum of a year of teacher training...

This is right on the money. Education is only as good as the teachers. In America, our education system is about the adults, not the children. There are some horrible teachers here who if they were in a different professions they would be fired. But a teaching job has become something of a right in this country. The only sustainable way to memorize is to practice. By my definition, anything worth memorizing is something you will use often enough for it to be of value to you. Since you use it, you remember it. This makes any conscious effort? to memorize unnecessary. A mathematician remembers everything he regularly uses, and looks up anything he doesn't, until he learns it by osmosis. Language learners eventually transition from drilling vocabulary to filling gaps, and learn new words only as necessary.

I love this TED talk, not because I agree with every bit of it, but I think? it's so crucial to have brilliant minds like Seth's working hard on the issue of education. In the defense of the current system: 1. Memorization IS crucial. It helps kids to make connections of understanding and innovation they couldn't make simply by flying from source to source in their notebooks. 2. Respect for authority, social skills, discipline definitely need to be taught to kids, now more than ever before.

I have two children who have learned more from the Discover channel than school (and they went to top ranking academic schools), and they? are totally unprepared for the new world reality. I agree with quite a lot of what he says, but I'm growing an annoyance at how TedX is becoming some sort of religion; no room for questioning, it's always someone babbling unsupported grand statements to the unquestioned excitement of an audience. On this instance I disagree that memorising is completely unnecessary (emergency, dial what?). I also don't agree that we don't need a degree of formatting; this is what supports? a functioning society, and contrary to what he says, it does work.

There are schools like this (without the digital Aristotle part) that are all about kids working at their own pace. The few ppl I know who attended this felt unprepared and uneducated. There needs to be an underlining structure that pushes the kid along. I just kind of got the feeling that this was about kids taking their education into their own hands? which many wont put in the work. I do like the potential this system would have though but there needs to be a balance. That's just my two cents

I like the internet Aristotle idea, but what about the social and leadership skills that require human interaction? I believe we should split the schooling system, half with internet Aristotle, and the other half with? practicing problem solving, and learning to learn reason. Also, schools teach subjects, but they don't how to incorporate subjects into living. Yes, we do definitely need a revitalization of the school system. Lawmakers are saying? that they are pushing for higher standards, but really they are just making laws saying, "schools must give their students more standardized tests (which teach nothing), and if the students don't pass them (which some students are horrible at such tests), then the school loses funding (which makes the problem worse for those students). Regarding the History Channel effect: It is a myth that popular shows are also more profitable! To illustrate lets say a producer has the choice between great show for 100$ that gets1000 viewers and a dumb show that gets 500 viewers but only costs 10$ then the dumber one will bring more viewers per invested? dollar.
